Throughout this journey, I've experienced a whirlwind of emotions, from deep anger to moments of calm acceptance and everything in between. Facing a diagnosis like this shook me to my core. At times, I was overwhelmed with fear, while other moments brought surprising strength. But one thing I’ve held onto throughout it all is a conscious choice to focus on happiness, to find and savor the good in each day, no matter how small. Waking up each morning felt like a gift—a chance to embrace life in ways I hadn’t thought of before. Here are a few things I’ve learned along the way:

  1. The Power of Positivity: Choosing to see the good in each day isn’t always easy, especially when you’re facing something as challenging as cancer. Yet, by looking for even the smallest blessings, I found a sense of peace and resilience. Whether it was the warmth of the sun, a comforting conversation, or simply a quiet moment to myself, these small instances reminded me that life still held beauty, even in the midst of struggle. Practicing gratitude became my shield and helped me shift focus from what was hard to what was meaningful.

  2. Accepting My Emotions Fully: I learned that there’s strength in allowing myself to feel every emotion that comes up without judgment. Suppressing fear, sadness, or frustration only made it harder. Acknowledging each emotion as it came gave me the space to process my experience on my own terms, and ultimately, I could return to a state of hope more naturally. I realized that every emotion—good or bad—was part of my healing and growth.

  3. Finding Joy in the Present Moment: In a way, this experience forced me to slow down. Life had been so busy that I often overlooked simple joys. Now, I appreciate the things I once took for granted—a morning coffee, fresh air on a walk, laughter with friends, or even time to simply be still. Living in the present has allowed me to experience life more fully, creating memories that feel rich and enduring, even in challenging times.

  4. The Importance of Support: One of the biggest lessons has been learning to lean on others. Whether family, friends, or the compassionate professionals I’ve met along the way, the power of support is undeniable. I’ve been humbled by the kindness and empathy people have shown. Even the smallest gestures—a text message, a visit, a heartfelt conversation—have meant the world to me. Support from others reminded me I wasn’t alone, which made all the difference when things felt hardest.

  5. Living with Purpose: Facing something as serious as cancer has changed how I view life. I want my days to have meaning and purpose. This doesn’t always mean doing something big or grand; sometimes, it’s as simple as sharing a smile or offering encouragement to others who may be struggling. By choosing purpose, I feel like I’m not only getting through this experience, but also growing from it. My hope is that my journey can inspire others to find hope, strength, and gratitude in their own lives.

Through all the ups and downs, I’ve learned that life’s beauty doesn’t fade, even when the path gets rough. Every day has been an opportunity to grow, to love, and to live fully. And for that, I am deeply grateful.

Warrior In Me,

Shavon
